Teenage Hero Saves Chivas as Tigres Collapse in Stunning Liga MX Turnaround
The pressure inside Estadio Akron was massive and by the final whistle, Guadalajara had delivered one of the most dramatic comebacks of the Liga MX season. Chivas defeated Tigres 2-0 in the second leg of the quarterfinals and even though the aggregate score finished tied at 3-3, Guadalajara advanced to the semifinals because of their higher position in the regular season standings.
And the biggest name of the night was not a veteran superstar. It was 18-year-old Santiago Sandoval.
The young forward changed the entire series in just three minutes. After Chivas spent most of the match attacking without reward, Sandoval finally broke through in the 74th minute with a close-range finish that reignited belief across the stadium. Then, only moments later, he struck again with a spectacular diving header that sent the crowd into chaos and pushed Chivas into the next round.
What makes this result even more remarkable is the situation Guadalajara faced coming into this match. Tigres had won the first leg 3-1 and looked fully in control of the series. Chivas also entered the playoffs missing several important starters who had already joined the Mexican national team camp ahead of World Cup preparations. Many believed the team simply did not have enough depth to survive.

But from the opening minutes, Chivas played with urgency and aggression. They controlled possession, created chance after chance and forced Tigres into a defensive shell for most of the game. Veteran goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán kept Tigres alive early with several huge saves, but the pressure never stopped.
Tigres, meanwhile, appeared increasingly nervous as the match went on. Their attack faded, their defensive line dropped deeper and the momentum completely shifted. When Francisco Reyes received a late red card, the collapse was complete.
This victory means far more than just a semifinal spot for Chivas. It is a statement about the club’s resilience, its young talent and the growing belief inside one of Mexico’s most historic football institutions. For Tigres, questions will now be asked about how a team with such experience allowed a two-goal aggregate lead to disappear under pressure.
Liga MX has already delivered major drama in these playoffs and with Chivas now advancing alongside Cruz Azul, the road to the championship is becoming even more intense.
