Folaus NRL return faces major hurdle nobody expected
Israel Folau's potential return to the National Rugby League is facing significant opposition from the Australian Rugby League Commission. Sources within the commission have revealed serious reservations about Folau, citing his past controversial statements on social media. This development comes as the Wests Tigers are reportedly keen to sign the former star before the June thirtieth deadline, potentially allowing him to play this season.
After sixteen years away from the thirteen-man game, Folau, now thirty-seven years old, is aiming for a comeback. His agent has apparently made an approach to the Wests Tigers, signaling a strong desire for his return. However, the Australian Rugby League Commission stands as the primary obstacle, with internal discussions expected in the coming days regarding the implications of his signing.

Nine.com.au has learned that the commission has concerns stemming from Folau's publicised homophobic remarks throughout his career. This is particularly sensitive given the recent wave of support for former NRL player Kane Evans, who publicly came out on television. A source close to the situation described the matter as "delicate," acknowledging both the potential benefit of having a star athlete like Folau and the "baggage" he carries.
Folau has not played in the NRL since two thousand and ten, when he famously moved to the newly formed Greater Western Sydney Giants in the Australian Football League. His AFL stint was brief, lasting only thirteen games before he transitioned to rugby union with the New South Wales Waratahs. He most recently played in Japan for Urayasu D-Rocks and is reported to be in excellent physical condition for his age.
While Folau reportedly favours a move to the Tigers, at least two other Sydney clubs are also showing interest. If a deal is struck before June thirtieth, Folau could be eligible to play in the current NRL season. Coach Benji Marshall has reportedly been approached by Folau's manager, with speculation of a train-and-trial agreement being discussed for as early as the deadline. Folau previously had a short stint with the Catalans Dragons in France in two thousand and twenty, before returning to Australia on compassionate grounds in two thousand and twenty-one.
The NRL career of Israel Folau saw him play ninety-one matches over four years, scoring seventy-three tries and he was one of the game's biggest stars before his departure. The Australian Rugby League Commission's decision will weigh the potential impact of his return against the values and image of the sport. All eyes will be on the commission as they deliberate on this complex issue in the coming days. Stay with Mirror 7 News for all updates as they happen.
