Jeddah Tower: Worlds Tallest Building Races Toward 1km Mark
The race to build the world's tallest skyscraper is heating up, with Saudi Arabia's JEC Tower reaching a significant construction milestone. This incredible structure has now surpassed 100 floors and is rapidly making its way towards its ambitious target of over a kilometer in height. Just a few months ago, we were reporting on its progress at 69 floors and the pace of construction since then has been truly astonishing. The JEC Tower, designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, is set to dwarf all existing skyscrapers, including the current record-holder, the Burj Khalifa. It's planned to have at least 157 floors, making it significantly taller than the 828-meter Burj Khalifa and nearly double the height of the United States' tallest building, One World Trade Center. To achieve such immense height, a very robust and carefully considered structural system is essential and the engineering team has certainly delivered.

This foundation is a marvel in itself, featuring a 5-meter thick raft foundation resting on 270 bored piles, each 1.8 meters in diameter, extending down to impressive depths of up to 105 meters. The JEC Tower, previously known as the Kingdom Tower or Jeddah Tower, is the centerpiece of a major new urban development in the vibrant port city of Jeddah. Inside, it will feature the world's highest observation point, alongside luxury hotel accommodations, office spaces and high-end residential apartments.
This megatall skyscraper is part of Saudi Arabia's broader "gigaprojects" initiative, aimed at transforming the nation into a major global tourism destination. While some other ambitious projects have faced adjustments or cancellations, the JEC Tower appears to be firmly on track, moving forward after years of delays. Saudi authorities seem determined to see this monumental vision realized, pushing ahead with its completion, which is now anticipated around 2028. The construction company Jinggong Steel International has also recently secured the bid for the main steel structure work above the 120th floor, further solidifying the project's progress and its commitment to using advanced steelwork.
