Leclercs Monaco Struggles and Q3 Crash

Charles Leclerc is understandably frustrated after a difficult qualifying session for the Monaco Grand Prix, where he could only manage fourth on the grid. This home race for the Ferrari driver has been plagued with issues, particularly concerning his car's braking system, which has made him feel uncertain about his braking points. Leclerc had looked strong early in the weekend, topping the first practice session and finishing second in the second, but these brake complaints surfaced quickly. These persistent issues continued into Saturday, with his final practice session hampered by a "horrendous" feeling under braking, setting the stage for a tense qualifying.

The situation intensified during qualifying when Leclerc, after taking provisional pole position, ultimately crashed on his final lap. He had been momentarily fastest before Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, Max Verstappen of Red Bull and his own teammate Lewis Hamilton set faster times. Leclerc's attempt to reclaim the top spot ended abruptly when he hit the barriers at Tabac corner. He expressed his disappointment, stating it's been an incredibly tough weekend with significant issues and admitted to not knowing "where to brake" at times, though he stressed it's a combination of factors, not just his driving.

Leclerc feels that the problems extend beyond just himself, describing the weekend as "messy" for his side of the garage, with further issues arising in Q3. Despite the team managing to get him back out on track for a final effort, the crash meant he couldn't improve his time. He explained that while he felt a connection with the car and the track earlier, the persistent issues eroded his confidence, making it incredibly difficult to extract the maximum performance. This lack of confidence on a challenging circuit like Monaco, or even Canada where he experienced similar issues, means he's paying a heavy price.

Meanwhile, his teammate Lewis Hamilton secured third place, outqualifying Leclerc for the second race in a row. Hamilton, who has faced criticism about his pace, used his qualifying performance to state he's not lacking speed and is in a good place with the car and team. He noted that the car felt "completely different" on Saturday, despite minor setup changes and that he had to make significant adjustments to rebalance it during qualifying. Despite the challenges, Hamilton felt he extracted everything possible from the car, even though it was on the edge.

Ferrari, who were considered favourites after a strong showing in Friday practice, were ultimately outpaced by Antonelli and Verstappen in qualifying. Hamilton mentioned that they lost the chance to fight for the front row due to the balance issues they encountered, which came as a surprise. Leclerc hopes that a potential solution to his car's issues, which he expects to be tested in Barcelona, will help him regain the feeling he previously had with the car and lead to more straightforward weekends. The focus now shifts to the race itself, where Leclerc will aim to overcome the grid position and his car's challenges.
