Yankees Catcher Shake-Up: Ali Sanchez Called Up Amidst Injury
It's been a bit of a whirlwind few days for the New York Yankees' catching situation and the latest news sees a new face stepping behind the plate. Just a couple of weeks ago, catcher Austin Wells himself expressed real frustration with his performance, even calling his stats "terrible." Now, it appears there might be a clearer explanation for those struggles, as Wells has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to cervical headaches, adding another layer of uncertainty to the team's catching depth. Manager Aaron Boone mentioned that Wells started complaining about neck discomfort and headaches late Friday night, prompting the team to look into it further.
This unexpected development has led to an immediate roster move, with catcher J.C. Escarra being recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Escarra had only just been optioned to the minors after Friday's loss to the Red Sox, but plans changed rapidly. In a corresponding move, Ali Sanchez has been promoted to the Major League roster to join Escarra behind the plate. Boone noted that he called Escarra late Friday to tell him not to head to Scranton yet, as he was already preparing to pack up his belongings in New York.
Also Read:Wells' performance this season hasn't been what the Yankees hoped for, slashing .166/.278/.255 with four home runs and seven RBIs over 47 games. This is a significant drop from his impressive rookie campaign last year, where he hit .219/.275/.436 with 21 homers and 71 RBIs. The team is hoping Wells' absence is short-term, with his timeline dependent on tests scheduled for Sunday, but for now, the catching duties will fall to Escarra and Sanchez. It's worth noting that entering Saturday, the Yankees' catchers ranked among the lowest in the league for OPS, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, highlighting the need for an upgrade.
Ali Sanchez himself expressed a bit of surprise when he heard about his promotion, which came about halfway through his Triple-A team's combined no-hitter on Friday evening. He mentioned that his teammates got a little excited when they saw him packing up his gear. The Yankees organization doesn't seem to be considering Ben Rice for a catching role at this moment, despite his experience there last season, preferring to keep him focused on first base to protect his offensive production. Boone described Sanchez as having a "great reputation as a defensive catcher," which is exactly what the struggling Yankees might need right now.
Sanchez has seen brief stints in the majors with the Blue Jays and Red Sox last year, batting .183 across parts of four seasons. This year at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he's hitting .227 with six home runs and 11 RBIs in 40 games. Manager Boone is hoping Sanchez can come up and provide a bit of a spark and with his defensive prowess, he could certainly help stabilize the position. The Yankees will likely be looking for a more significant offensive upgrade behind the dish as the trade deadline approaches, but for now, Sanchez is expected to provide solid defense and a right-handed bat to balance out the left-handed hitting duo of Wells and Escarra.
