Billy Monger Triumphs in Triathlon Milestone on Road to Kona for Comic Relief
Billy Monger, the inspiring former racing driver turned TV presenter, recently shared his immense joy after achieving a significant milestone in his preparation for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Monger, who is just 25 years old, is gearing up for what might be the most demanding challenge of his life, competing in one of the toughest endurance events in the world, all in the name of charity for Comic Relief.
Monger's journey to this point is nothing short of extraordinary. In 2017, a devastating crash during a Formula 4 race led to the amputation of both of his legs. However, this life-altering event didn't deter him from pursuing his passion for racing and sport. Within a year, Billy was back on the track, and in 2021, he completed an impressive endurance challenge across England, raising an astounding £3 million for charity.
Now, Monger is setting his sights on the IRONMAN World Championship, where he aims to set a new record as the fastest double amputee on prosthetic legs. To achieve this, he hopes to complete the grueling race in under 16 hours, 26 minutes, and 59 seconds. His journey, which will be documented and aired on BBC One and iPlayer in 2025, promises to be an inspiring story of determination, resilience, and the human spirit.

Recently, Monger celebrated a major milestone in his preparation by successfully completing his first competitive triathlon, the Outlaw Half in Nottingham. The event, known for its challenging course, included a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile half marathon. Despite the physical and mental challenges, Billy crossed the finish line with an impressive time of 6 hours, 36 minutes, and 50 seconds.
Reflecting on his achievement, Monger expressed his elation, particularly at overcoming the half marathon—a significant feat for someone with his injuries. He shared that the run course was particularly challenging, with a good portion of it being off-road, which presented unique difficulties for him as a double amputee. Despite these obstacles, Billy’s determination and grit saw him through, and he was overwhelmed with emotion as he crossed the finish line.
However, Billy knows that this is just one step on a much longer and more arduous journey. The IRONMAN World Championship in Kona is known for its brutal conditions, with athletes facing intense heat and a course that tests even the most seasoned competitors. The race, which includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full marathon, is not for the faint of heart.
As he prepares for this monumental challenge, Monger remains focused on his goal of raising vital funds for Comic Relief and proving that no obstacle is insurmountable. His story continues to inspire countless individuals, showing that with determination, perseverance, and a positive attitude, anything is possible.
Billy Monger's journey to Kona is more than just a race; it’s a testament to the power of the human spirit. As the October 26th race day approaches, the world will be watching and cheering on this remarkable young man as he strives to achieve yet another incredible milestone in his already awe-inspiring journey.
