Daniel Sancho Sentenced to Life for Murder of Colombian Surgeon Edwin Arrieta
In a chilling turn of events, Spanish chef Daniel Sancho has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of Colombian plastic surgeon Edwin Arrieta. The gruesome crime took place on the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand in August 2023.
Sancho, who is the son of well-known Spanish actor Rodolfo Sánchez, was found guilty of murdering, dismembering, and concealing the body of Arrieta, a 44-year-old surgeon who was in Thailand for a holiday. The prosecution presented evidence that Sancho had meticulously planned the crime, including purchasing knives and plastic bags which were discovered at the scene.
Sancho, 30, initially claimed he acted in self-defense after a supposed sexual assault by Arrieta. He described himself as a "hostage" of Arrieta's obsessive behavior, alleging that the surgeon had disrupted his personal life and coerced him into actions he would not normally take. However, during the trial, investigators uncovered clear indications of premeditation. This included Sancho's purchase of items used in the murder, such as knives and cleaning supplies, and his subsequent attempt to cover up the crime by disposing of the body in various locations across the island.

The horrific case began on July 31, 2023, when Arrieta arrived on Koh Phangan to meet Sancho, whom he had met online. After spending several days exploring the island together, Arrieta mysteriously vanished. Sancho reported his friend's disappearance to Thai authorities, but surveillance footage later showed him buying materials linked to the crime.
The search for Arrieta led to the discovery of human remains in a local landfill, which were later identified as belonging to the missing surgeon. The investigation quickly pointed to Sancho, who was arrested on August 8, 2023. Following his confession, Sancho guided the police to several locations where he had disposed of Arrieta's dismembered body.
Sancho's conviction has left both Spanish and Colombian communities in shock. Edwin Arrieta, originally from Lorica, Colombia, was known for his successful career as a plastic surgeon and was described by his family as a generous and kind-hearted individual.
