Arizona Couple Completes Epic Journey to Every U.S. National Park Unit
PHOENIX — After 37 years of dedication and adventure, Darryl and Kathleen Toupkin, an Arizona couple, have achieved an extraordinary feat: visiting every single one of the 430 units managed by the National Park Service (NPS). Their journey, which began in 1987 with a visit to Mesa Verde National Park in New Mexico, has taken them across the country and to the farthest reaches of U.S. territories.
The Toupkins' adventure began as a casual exploration of national parks but evolved into a full-fledged quest when they decided in 2004 to see all 430 NPS units. These units include not just national parks, but also national monuments, historical sites, recreation areas, and more. From Alaska to the U.S. Virgin Islands, their travels spanned over 100,000 miles by car, plus an additional 100,000 miles by plane, helicopter, and seaplane. Their journey also included countless hours of hiking, paddling, and biking through these diverse landscapes.
In August 2024, the Toupkins visited their final destination: St. Croix Island International Historic Site in Maine, marking the completion of their remarkable quest. Their achievement is even more notable considering the number of NPS units increased from 396 to 430 during their journey due to new designations and additions.

Kathleen’s favorite sites include the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site in Richmond, Virginia, and the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Vincennes, Indiana, which she finds particularly inspiring. Darryl, on the other hand, holds a special place for Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve in Alaska, one of the least visited yet most remote units.
The Toupkins' journey was not without its challenges. They nearly missed their goal when a new NPS unit was announced just a week after they completed their travels. Fortunately, they had already visited this new addition, ensuring their accomplishment remained intact.
The couple’s motivation stemmed from a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and historical significance of the places they visited. As Kathleen humorously puts it, "Never give my husband a list!" Yet, their exploration was driven by a genuine desire to experience and appreciate the vast and varied landscapes of the United States.
Now that they have completed their quest, the Toupkins look forward to revisiting their favorite spots and exploring new units as they are designated. Their journey has not only fulfilled a personal goal but also highlighted the rich tapestry of America’s natural and historical heritage.
For those inspired by the Toupkins’ story, their website offers detailed accounts of their travels and the experiences they’ve cherished along the way. Their journey underscores a remarkable commitment to exploring and preserving the diverse and beautiful places that make up the National Park Service’s vast portfolio.
Congratulations to Darryl and Kathleen Toupkin on an incredible achievement that showcases the spirit of adventure and the love for our nation's natural treasures.
