Botulism Outbreak in Indre-et-Loire: Five in Intensive Care, Pesto Jars Under Scrutiny
In a troubling development in Indre-et-Loire, five individuals are currently in intensive care following a suspected outbreak of botulism, a rare but potentially deadly illness. The local health authorities have linked the cases to jars of wild garlic pesto from the brand Ô Ptits Oignons. This alarming situation has led to a nationwide alert and a massive search for the affected products.
According to Patrice Latron, the Prefect of Indre-et-Loire, the five patients, all adults, were admitted to the Tours hospital after experiencing severe symptoms, including digestive issues, respiratory difficulties, and paralysis. Two couples sought emergency medical care on Saturday, followed by a fifth person the next day, all having attended the same birthday party. These individuals are now in intensive care, conscious but on ventilators, as doctors work to manage their symptoms and provide the necessary treatment.

The suspicion of botulism arises from the consumption of the pesto, which was produced in the Touraine region. This artisanal product is under scrutiny as the potential source of the contamination. Botulism, caused by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, is a serious illness that can lead to paralysis and, in severe cases, death. The toxin produced by the bacterium affects the nervous system, causing symptoms like double vision, difficulty swallowing, and muscle paralysis.
Health officials are actively investigating the outbreak, with a focus on validating the botulism diagnosis and ensuring the best possible care for the affected individuals. They have issued a recall for around 600 jars of the pesto, which were sold at various local events throughout the year, including the Fête des Plantes et du Printemps at the Ch'steau de la Bourdaisière and the Festival de la Tomate et des Saveurs. These jars were distributed at four events: the Fête des Plantes and du Printemps in late March, Nature en Fête in mid-April, the Foire à l’Ail et au Basilic in late July, and the recent Festival de la Tomate.
Authorities have urged anyone who purchased these jars to dispose of them immediately to prevent further cases. The recall has been issued at a national level, and efforts are underway to trace and contact buyers, particularly those who made purchases via credit card. An investigation is also being conducted by the public health agency and local food safety authorities to confirm the source of the contamination.
The producer of the pesto has publicly apologized and expressed deep regret over the incident. Despite the artisan’s history of no previous issues, the situation has understandably caused significant distress among the affected families. The producer’s apology and ongoing investigation reflect the gravity of the situation and the commitment to addressing and preventing such public health crises.
As the investigation continues, health officials are monitoring the situation closely, and the public is advised to remain vigilant and report any suspected products. The results of further tests from the Pasteur Institute are awaited to definitively confirm the link between the pesto and the botulism cases.
