CJ Hendry's New York Art Event Interrupted by Overcrowding
Australian contemporary artist CJ Hendry's highly anticipated Flower Market exhibition in New York City faced an unexpected and dramatic halt due to overcrowding. The event, set up on Roosevelt Island, quickly became a hotspot of excitement and confusion, with police intervening to manage the massive crowd.
The exhibition featured thousands of plush flowers displayed inside a massive white tent, creating an enchanting, artful landscape reminiscent of a floral paradise. It was designed as a follow-up to Hendry's successful Public Pool installation from earlier in the year. However, what was meant to be a vibrant showcase of art turned into a chaotic scene as the event reached full capacity on its second day.

Police officers were seen urging visitors to leave, shouting “It’s closed, go,” as the line of eager attendees snaked through the park and down the steps. The decision to shut down the event was due to the overwhelming number of guests, with safety concerns prompting the closure. The officers made it clear that the closure was a matter of public safety, stating that they were merely enforcing an unavoidable situation.
Hendry, known for her distinctive and immersive art installations, responded to the situation with grace and humor. On social media, she acknowledged the disappointment of those who couldn't experience the exhibit and apologized for the inconvenience. "We did a thing. It was great. It got shut down," she wrote. Hendry assured her followers that her team was actively working on finding a new venue. “We’re finding a new location, we’re going to build a new exhibition overnight and we’ll let you know the location tomorrow. We’re very excited — there’s still one more day of Flower Market.”
Despite the setback, the artist's swift and positive response won her praise online. Many expressed frustration over the disruption but appreciated Hendry’s commitment to ensuring that visitors wouldn’t miss out on the experience. Some were critical of the way the situation was handled, mentioning the rude behavior of staff and the lack of clear signage, while others were more understanding, acknowledging the challenges of managing such a popular event.
The exhibition was successfully relocated to a new venue in Brooklyn, where it continued to attract art lovers and visitors eager to see Hendry's plush floral creations. The temporary closure and subsequent reopening showcased the resilience and adaptability of both the artist and her team, ensuring that the artistic vision of the Flower Market reached its audience despite the initial hurdles.
Hendry’s ability to turn a challenging situation into an opportunity for continued engagement highlights her dedication to her art and her audience. The Flower Market, despite its rocky start, ended up being a testament to the artist’s creativity and the high demand for her unique exhibitions.
