Power Outages Hit Central Lonsdale and Bulkley Valley: Thousands Affected Across BC

On Monday, September 9th, a significant power outage impacted nearly 3,000 BC Hydro customers in North Vancouver’s Central Lonsdale area. The outage, which occurred around 12:10 p.m., was caused by a downed wire between Mahon and Chesterfield avenues, affecting several businesses and households in one of the busiest parts of the North Shore. BC Hydro quickly dispatched crews to assess the situation, ensuring the area was safe while awaiting specialized teams to repair the damaged line. As of the early afternoon, restoration of power was expected by 7 p.m., leaving many residents and businesses to go about their day without electricity.

Power outages are not new to BC residents, and it wasn’t just North Vancouver that experienced disruptions. Another massive outage has been planned by BC Hydro for Sunday, September 15th, affecting over 10,000 customers across communities along Highway 16. This outage, scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., will affect areas from Telkwa to Kitwanga, including smaller towns such as Hazelton, Smithers, and Moricetown. This planned outage is part of a major infrastructure project to relocate a 138-kilovolt transmission line near Telkwa. The work is related to BC Hydro’s Prince George to Terrace Capacitors Stations Project, designed to increase the region’s electricity capacity and meet growing energy demands, particularly from industries like mining and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

The impact of these outages stretches beyond mere inconvenience. In Central Lonsdale, local businesses have been hit hard, forced to shut down or operate on limited capacity during peak hours. In the Bulkley Valley, the planned outage will cause similar disruptions, though communities have been given advance notice to prepare.

With power expected to be restored in North Vancouver by the evening and the Bulkley Valley set to face its blackout on Sunday, BC Hydro continues to work diligently to ensure safe and reliable electricity for all its customers. The utility has expressed gratitude for the public’s patience as crews work to resolve these power issues.
