Rory McIlroy Falls Short in BMW PGA Championship Playoff, but Stays Positive

With that, Horschel took home his second BMW PGA Championship win, and McIlroy had to settle for another near-miss.

Reflecting on the loss, McIlroy was philosophical. “It’s golf, and I’m playing well,” he said. “The game is testing me a little more than in the past, but that’s okay. If you keep putting yourself in contention, sooner or later, the wins will come.” He’s no stranger to the highs and lows of the game, having endured many close calls this season, including his recent loss at the Irish Open just a week before.
What keeps McIlroy grounded is his long-term view of his career. At 35, he recognizes that setbacks are part of the process and that he’s in a good position overall. He’s already secured two wins this year, but with so many close calls, it’s natural to feel frustrated. Still, McIlroy is keeping his eye on the bigger picture. “When you think of my career as a 30-year journey, this is just one year,” he noted, staying focused on the future.
For now, McIlroy is looking ahead to upcoming tournaments, confident that his form will eventually bring him more success. He’s also well-positioned to win the DP World Tour’s order of merit for the sixth time, which could be a significant highlight of his year. Though he admits he’s “getting a little too used” to these near-misses, McIlroy remains determined, showing the resilience that has made him one of the world’s top golfers.
