Sandover Medal 2024: A Historic Tie for WAFL’s Most Prestigious Award

The Sandover Medal 2024 has unfolded into an unforgettable chapter in WAFL history, as the prestigious award for the best player of the season has been shared for the first time in nearly two decades. Swan Districts' star recruit Nik Rokahr and Claremont’s dynamic Callan England have both claimed the medal, each receiving 19 votes in a thrilling conclusion to the count.

The suspense leading up to the announcement was palpable. Rokahr entered the final round with a slim two-vote lead, but his chances were jeopardized as he failed to poll any votes in Swan Districts' final game against Perth. Meanwhile, England capitalized on this opportunity, delivering a standout performance against Subiaco that earned him the maximum three votes, allowing him to level with Rokahr. This tie marks the first shared Sandover Medal since Jaxon Crabb of Claremont and South Fremantle's Toby McGrath achieved the same feat in 2005.

Rokahr, who joined Swan Districts from Norwood, was an outstanding performer throughout the season. His consistent form, including four best-on-ground awards, solidified his place as a top contender. Averaging 30 disposals, 4.6 clearances, and six score involvements per game, Rokahr’s influence was undeniable. Despite a late surge in his vote tally, he couldn't maintain his initial lead, making the final count all the more dramatic.

England, at just 24, joined a notable group of Claremont players who have won the Sandover Medal. His season was highlighted by an impressive performance record, including nine matches where he polled votes and three best-on-ground awards. England's ability to come strong in the latter part of the season demonstrated his resilience and skill, securing his place as a co-medallist.

In an exciting finish, East Perth’s Mitch Crowden narrowly missed out on joining the top two, finishing third with 18 votes. South Fremantle's Matt Parker and Haiden Schloithe, along with Claremont’s Ollie Eastland, rounded out the top five, each securing 17 votes. The tight competition and high level of performance throughout the season made for a captivating Sandover Medal count.

The night also honored other outstanding achievements in WAFL. West Perth's Tyler Keitel claimed his second consecutive Bernie Naylor Medal as the leading goalkicker, while East Perth’s Ross McQueen was recognized as Coach of the Year with the JJ Leonard Medal. Additionally, the Prendergast Medal for the WAFL reserves fairest and best went to Claremont’s Menno Inverarity, and the Jack Clarke Medal was awarded to East Fremantle’s Declan Pauline for the best colts player.

In summary, the Sandover Medal 2024 has etched its place in WAFL lore with a historic tie, celebrating the exceptional talents of both Nik Rokahr and Callan England. The season’s close was as electrifying as it was historic, affirming the league's status as a showcase of top-tier Australian football talent.
