Vancouver's Eastside 10K to Bring Street Closures and Exciting Race Action This Weekend
This weekend, Vancouver will see a thrilling event as the 11th annual Under Armour Eastside 10K takes over the streets of Gastown and Strathcona. On Sunday, September 22, more than 3,500 runners will gather to race through the iconic neighborhoods as part of the Canada Running Series. The event has sold out, reflecting its growing popularity and the community’s enthusiasm for this exciting race.
However, with the race comes several road closures. Streets in the affected areas will begin closing as early as 5 a.m., with the last roads reopening around noon. Major streets such as Abbott, Cordova, Powell, and Alexander will be temporarily blocked off. Commuters and local residents should be aware that bus routes, including the 4 Powell, will be detoured throughout the morning.

Beyond the logistical updates, the race promises to be an exciting spectacle for both runners and spectators. A stacked field of elite athletes is expected, including two-time Olympian Geneviève Lalonde, who is returning to competitive running after a two-year hiatus. Her return is especially noteworthy, as Lalonde has been a force in Canadian athletics, holding the national record in the 3,000m steeplechase and finishing 11th at the Tokyo Olympics. It’s sure to be a thrilling comeback for her as she tackles this 10K.
On the men’s side, rising star Andrew Davies, known for his strength in longer distances, is expected to perform strongly. With a personal best of 29:25 in the 10K, he will be a key contender, along with defending champion Thomas Broatch and record-holder Ben Preisner. Both the men’s and women’s course records will be under threat as these top athletes push the pace.
This year’s event is not only about competition; it’s also about community support. The Canada Running Series has partnered with five local charities, including Promise Vancouver and the Urban Native Youth Association. Together, they aim to raise $50,000 to support vital community services.
For those in Vancouver this weekend, whether you’re watching the race or navigating the road closures, the Eastside 10K promises to bring energy, excitement, and a showcase of athletic excellence to the city.
