Adam Lambert's Electrifying Broadway Debut as the Emcee inCabaret

Adam Lambert is no stranger to commanding the stage, but his latest venture into Broadway brings a new kind of energy. On September 26, 2024, Lambert made his highly anticipated debut as the Emcee in the iconic musical Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. Joining a new cast alongside Auli’i Cravalho as Sally Bowles and Calvin Leon Smith as Cliff, Lambert brings both charisma and intensity to his portrayal of the character. Known for his time as Queen’s frontman and his mesmerizing vocal performances, he slips into the role of the Emcee with a perfect balance of sinister charm and complex vulnerability.

For Lambert, this return to theater has been a long time coming. “I’ve been missing theater,” he admits. Despite receiving offers over the years, the timing and projects never felt quite right—until now. After watching Eddie Redmayne in the role in London, Lambert found himself captivated by the production and soon, the stars aligned for his own turn as the Emcee.

Lambert didn't take any chances in preparing for this monumental night. To get himself ready, he focused on self-care, loosening up with a pre-show massage and downing caffeinated drinks to embody the manic energy of his character. He even does his own makeup for the opening number, embracing the bold and theatrical face that helps him get into the Emcee’s mindset—complete with exaggerated eyebrows and wild eye makeup evocative of 1930s Berlin.

The excitement didn't stop with the performance. At the afterparty, held at Sir Henry’s, Lambert donned an extravagant Edward Sexton suit and Dolce & Gabbana shirt, fitting the show’s glamorous and edgy vibe. Though he took a brief moment to catch his breath and refresh his makeup, he didn’t linger backstage long, eager to join the celebration with his loved ones. For Lambert, sharing the experience with his partner, family, and close friends made the night even more meaningful after months of preparation.

Lambert’s portrayal of the Emcee brings a contemporary flair to this beloved role, while still honoring its roots in a production that’s as dark and immersive as ever. The Kit Kat Club’s setting—a hedonistic refuge amidst the backdrop of pre-war Germany—allows Lambert to fully showcase his talents, engaging the audience in a whirlwind of decadence and danger. This Broadway debut is not just a homecoming for Lambert but a full-circle moment that reconnects him with his early passion for theater, and it’s clear that both he and the audience are reveling in every minute of it.
