Alberta's Weekend Bliss: Winter is Just Around the Corner!

As we embrace the weekend, Alberta is set to enjoy some delightful weather before winter arrives in full force. The forecast shows a dramatic shift coming soon, thanks to an atmospheric river influencing our weather patterns. While we relish the warm temperatures now, it's essential to prepare for the colder days ahead.

This weekend, particularly Saturday, promises mid to high teen temperatures for Calgary and Edmonton, allowing residents to soak up the autumn sun. Lethbridge might even see temperatures soar into the mid-twenties, creating perfect conditions for outdoor activities and gatherings. Chief Meteorologist Tiffany Lizée from Global Calgary highlighted the warm spell attributed to the Chinook winds moving in from the west, which will raise temperatures across southern Alberta into the high teens and low twenties.

However, this pleasant weather is fleeting. By Monday, we can expect a stark change as temperatures are predicted to drop significantly, barely rising above freezing. The mountains will start receiving snow over the weekend, which will then extend into northern Alberta. Areas in the capital region should prepare for mixed precipitation by Sunday, with Calgary likely to experience snowfall on Monday. Lethbridge may see rain instead, as the moisture moves southward.

The driving force behind this weather shift is a low-pressure system brewing over the Pacific, which is being fueled by subtropical moisture from an atmospheric river. This combination means that while we enjoy this weekend’s warmth, we must be ready for winter’s first snowfall early next week. Snowfall warnings have already been issued for some regions, with significant amounts expected in the Rockies and surrounding areas.

For those planning to travel, especially along Highway 3 through the Kootenay pass, be advised that snow accumulation could reach up to 15 centimeters overnight. The Trans-Canada Highway also faces a heavy rainfall warning, with forecasts suggesting up to 80 millimeters of rain could lead to localized flooding, posing risks for motorists. It’s crucial to stay updated on road conditions and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter driving, as winter tires or chains are required from October 1 to April 30.

As we transition from fall to winter, it’s a reminder to enjoy these last few warm days while they last. So, make the most of your weekend, Alberta, but keep an eye on the skies, as winter is knocking on the door!
