
Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Ed Wheeler, Veteran Actor, Dead at 88
The entertainment world has lost another gem with the passing of veteran actor Ed Wheeler, who died at the age of 88. Wheeler, known for his roles in iconic TV series like Law & Order and Blue Bloods , passed away on August 21, 2024, due to respiratory failure from pneumonia complications. His wife, Messeret Stroman Wheeler, confirmed his death and shared a heartfelt tribute, remembering him as a source of light, laughter, and love.
Wheeler's career spanned several decades, beginning with TV commercials and extending to film, theater, and television. His early work included national commercials for brands like Reynolds Wrap, Sudafed, and Pepcid AC, but it wasn't long before his talent carried him into more prominent roles. His first notable screen appearance came in 1978 on the PBS series Watch Your Mouth . This was just the beginning of a journey that would see Wheeler take on diverse roles in both television and film.

In 1987, he made his film debut in Broadcast News , alongside William Hurt and Holly Hunter. Beyond screen acting, Wheeler was deeply involved in theater and was an alum of the Negro Ensemble Company, an organization that has been instrumental in fostering Black talent in the American theater scene. His stage performances included roles in Zooman and the Sign , The Waiting Room , and The Dance on Widow’s Row , to name just a few. In 2017, his contributions to the performing arts were recognized with the Living Legend Award from the National Black Theatre Festival.
Wheeler’s legacy extends beyond acting. Along with his wife, Messeret, he formed a production company and ventured into producing, with their most recent project being the 2023 short film Keepers of the Flame . As a couple, they supported numerous artistic organizations, leaving a lasting impact on the arts community.
