Darius Lassiter’s Last-Second Heroics Propel BYU to Thrilling 38-35 Win Over Oklahoma State
What a game it was for BYU fans on October 18, 2024! Senior wide receiver Darius Lassiter delivered a jaw-dropping, game-winning touchdown in the final seconds, leading No. 13 BYU to a thrilling 38-35 victory over Oklahoma State. The atmosphere at LaVell Edwards Stadium was electric, with nearly 63,000 fans on their feet, and Lassiter's last-second play will surely be remembered for years to come.
With just 19 seconds left on the clock, BYU found itself trailing by four points, facing a critical second-and-10 situation from the Oklahoma State 35-yard line. Junior quarterback Jake Retzlaff, calm under pressure, scanned the field as his offensive line provided excellent protection. Retzlaff rifled the ball downfield, aiming for Lassiter, who wasn’t even the primary option on the play.

Originally, the play was designed for freshman receiver JoJo Phillips, but Lassiter found an opening in the defense. With Oklahoma State playing zone coverage, Lassiter was able to slip free and Retzlaff, recognizing the opportunity, let the ball fly. Lassiter made an outstanding grab at the 15-yard line, quickly dodged two defenders, and sprinted into the end zone for the touchdown. His celebration was pure emotion — the kind of moment every player dreams of, especially in front of BYU’s passionate student section, known as the ROC.
After scoring, Lassiter admitted that the emotions were overwhelming. "I didn’t know if I wanted to cry or be happy," he said. "I’m just glad we got the job done." Retzlaff echoed the sentiment, calling it a "magical" and "spiritual" moment. "How can you not be romantic about this game?" he added, describing the emotion on the sidelines as several teammates were moved to tears.
This dramatic conclusion capped off a hard-fought game in which both teams battled fiercely. Oklahoma State came close to pulling off the upset, but BYU’s resilience shone through in the final moments. With the win, BYU remained undefeated in the 2024 season, much to the delight of their fans and head coach Kalani Sitake, who celebrated alongside his team and the roaring crowd.
Lassiter’s clutch play and Retzlaff’s composure under pressure will be talked about for a long time, especially among BYU faithful. It was the kind of heart-stopping action that defines college football, where one play can change everything in a matter of seconds. What a game, what a finish, and what a season it’s shaping up to be for BYU!
