Frozen Waffles Recalled Due to Listeria Concerns, Major Retailers Affected

TreeHouse Foods, a major Illinois-based food manufacturer, has recently issued a voluntary recall of a wide variety of frozen waffles due to potential listeria contamination. This recall impacts products sold at major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Publix, Harris Teeter, and others across the U.S. and Canada. Brands affected by this recall include Kodiak Cakes, Simple Truth, and Foodhold, all of which are produced by TreeHouse Foods. The company is taking this action as a precautionary measure after routine testing at one of its facilities detected the presence of listeria.

Listeria, a type of bacteria, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly, individuals with weakened immune systems, newborns, and pregnant women. Symptoms of listeria infection typically resemble the flu, including fever, headache, and muscle aches, and they can appear anytime from the same day up to 10 weeks after consuming contaminated food. While most healthy individuals recover from a listeria infection without needing medical treatment, it can lead to severe health complications in more serious cases.

As of now, TreeHouse Foods has reported no confirmed illnesses linked to these recalled products. However, both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency are closely monitoring the situation. Given the serious nature of listeria, TreeHouse Foods is urging customers to check their freezers for any of the recalled waffle products and either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund or credit.

This recall adds to a growing number of listeria-related incidents across the country. In fact, listeria contamination has been a prominent concern in 2024, with outbreaks primarily linked to deli meats. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in September that 10 people have died across 19 states due to listeria infections related to ready-to-eat meat and poultry. These outbreaks have led to recalls of over 11 million pounds of food.

While no illnesses have been reported in connection to these frozen waffles, it’s essential to stay informed and proactive. Consumers are encouraged to check any frozen waffle products they may have in their homes and review the list of affected items. If you find any recalled products, follow the company’s guidance: throw them out or return them for a refund.
