HBO Documentary Names Peter Todd as Bitcoin's Mysterious Creator, Satoshi Nakamoto
In a surprising turn of events, Peter Todd, a prominent Bitcoin developer, has been named by an HBO documentary as the real identity behind Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin. Since the publication of Bitcoin’s white paper in 2008, the true identity of Nakamoto has been the subject of endless speculation. Bitcoin, now a $1.2 trillion asset, has grown into a financial revolution, and the person or group known as Nakamoto is believed to control approximately 1.1 million bitcoins, worth nearly $70 billion.

The HBO documentary, "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery," directed by Cullen Hoback, presents a compelling case that Todd is the elusive Nakamoto. Todd, who has been involved in Bitcoin's development since 2010, was confronted directly in the documentary about his possible involvement in the creation of the cryptocurrency. Hoback suggests that the use of a pseudonym, Satoshi Nakamoto, may have been a way for Todd—who was in his early twenties and completing an arts degree in 2008—to make Bitcoin appear more credible. This theory also points to a series of clues, including a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal introduced by Todd in 2015 and a chat log from Todd in which he cryptically refers to himself as a “leading expert” in sacrificing bitcoins, as further evidence of his connection to Nakamoto.
However, Todd has strongly denied these allegations. In the documentary and in subsequent statements, he describes the claims as “ludicrous” and accuses Hoback of grasping at straws to fit his narrative. While Todd admits he was aware of Bitcoin’s potential early on and was close to other key figures in the community, he maintains that he is not Nakamoto.
Despite Todd's denials, the documentary has reignited public curiosity and debate about Nakamoto's identity. Many in the cryptocurrency community, including influential figures, remain skeptical of the claim, with some suggesting that Nakamoto’s identity might never be truly revealed. The enduring mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto continues to fascinate, leaving the world to wonder whether the creator of Bitcoin will ever step forward.
