CMA Awards 2024: Winners, Highlights, and Unexpected Moments
The 58th Annual CMA Awards brought Nashville alive with memorable performances, emotional wins, and a few surprises that kept fans talking long after the final curtain fell. It was a night that celebrated the best in country music while also showcasing moments of unpredictability that are uniquely CMA.
Morgan Wallen, one of the night’s most anticipated winners, took home the coveted Entertainer of the Year award. However, his absence left presenter Jeff Bridges to awkwardly fill in, mispronouncing Wallen's last name and humorously wondering aloud, “Do I get the award?” The scene was both entertaining and odd, with co-hosts Lainey Wilson, Luke Bryan, and Peyton Manning stepping in to close the show on a lighthearted note. Despite the oddity, Wallen’s win reaffirmed his dominance in country music, following a year filled with sold-out stadium tours and chart-topping hits like his duet with Post Malone, “I Had Some Help.”

Chris Stapleton was another big winner of the night, securing three awards, including Song and Single of the Year for “White Horse.” Stapleton, known for his soulful performances, also delivered a heartfelt tribute to his wife, Morgane, acknowledging her as his creative cornerstone. Cody Johnson’s “Leather” earned Album of the Year honors, while Megan Moroney was named New Artist of the Year, continuing her meteoric rise in the industry.
Lainey Wilson continued her CMA streak with her third consecutive win as Female Vocalist of the Year, also claiming Music Video of the Year for “Wildflowers and Wild Horses.” Meanwhile, Old Dominion extended their record with their seventh win for Vocal Group of the Year, solidifying their legacy in the genre.
Performances were the heart of the evening, ranging from Carrie Underwood’s surprise duet with Cody Johnson to Post Malone’s country debut with Chris Stapleton on “California Sober.” Yet, not all moments hit the mark. Bailey Zimmerman’s chaotic set and Post Malone’s strained second performance, “Yours,” drew mixed reactions.
The show paid homage to legends, with tributes to Kris Kristofferson and the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award going to George Strait. The King of Country’s understated acceptance speech and performances by peers like Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson reminded everyone of the genre's roots.
As the CMAs wrapped up, they left a lasting impression, blending the energy of rising stars with the enduring legacy of country greats. It was a night to celebrate, reflect, and look forward to the future of country music.
