Heartbreaking Incident: Baby Dies in Sudden Dog Attack
A tragic incident unfolded in Coventry, where a seven-month-old baby, Elle Doherty, suffered a fatal dog attack. The family pet, a 31-kilogram Belgian Malinois named Zeus, unexpectedly attacked the infant in a moment that lasted less than a second. Despite the immediate actions of her parents to intervene, Elle succumbed to severe head injuries and cardiac arrest just an hour later at the hospital.
This devastating event occurred on June 16, as Elle was crawling near her parents at their family home. An inquest revealed that the attack was captured on an indoor security camera, showing the parents’ swift efforts to separate the dog from their child. Investigators suggested that Elle might have leaned on Zeus while crawling, which led to the sudden attack. Area coroner Delroy Henry described the event as “sudden and unanticipated,” emphasizing that Zeus had shown no previous signs of aggression toward the family or the child.

The Belgian Malinois had been with the family since 2020 and was described as a well-behaved pet, good with people and other dogs. However, Zeus had previously undergone behavioral training due to concerns about his reactive tendencies. A trainer had once identified the dog as displaying dominant behaviors but noted significant improvements following the sessions. In the weeks leading up to the incident, the family contacted the trainer again after observing renewed signs of reactivity, though no session took place before the tragedy.
This heart-wrenching case highlights the unpredictability of animal behavior, even among pets with no known history of aggression. Coroner Henry expressed profound sympathy for Elle’s parents, whose lives have been irreversibly changed. Zeus was sedated and euthanized shortly after the attack.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance when young children interact with animals. Despite best efforts to ensure safety, tragedies like this underline the inherent risks, even with trusted family pets.
