Harbhajan Singh Supports Gavaskar's Suggestion to Appoint Bumrah as Captain for BGT 2024
The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series between India and Australia is set to ignite fresh debates, especially around India's leadership. With Rohit Sharma likely to miss the first Test due to the birth of his child, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar proposed that Jasprit Bumrah should be appointed as captain for the entire series. This suggestion has sparked significant conversation in the cricketing world, with opinions from various experts coming to the fore.
One prominent voice supporting this idea is that of Harbhajan Singh. The legendary Indian off-spinner, in a recent interaction with Jatin Sapru on his YouTube channel, endorsed Gavaskar's call. He argued that appointing Bumrah as captain should not pose any problem, as the fast bowler has proven leadership capabilities. Harbhajan added that Bumrah is more than capable of leading the team, especially in such an important series.

What makes this conversation even more intriguing is the fickleness of public opinion on captaincy. Harbhajan pointed out that if Bumrah were to succeed in his leadership role during the first two Tests, he would gain widespread support from the fans. However, if the team were to falter, the same fans would quickly call for Rohit Sharma's return as the captain. Harbhajan, while acknowledging the volatile nature of public sentiment, expressed his belief that having a consistent leader for the entire series would be ideal. This way, if India were to lose, the responsibility would rest solely on the shoulders of both the captain and the team, without fueling unnecessary debates.
He also cautioned against the possibility of a leadership merry-go-round if India were to lose under Bumrah and then bring back Rohit Sharma. Such a scenario, according to Harbhajan, could potentially disrupt the team’s balance. If Bumrah performs well as captain and India wins the first couple of Tests, he would solidify his position, and the focus would shift to the team’s performance rather than the captaincy debate.
In the context of Rohit's absence, Harbhajan made it clear that it was a special moment for the Sharma family with the arrival of their baby boy, and Rohit should be allowed to spend this time with his family. Harbhajan’s endorsement of Bumrah's captaincy also reflects a pragmatic approach, understanding that leadership transitions can be seamless if handled well.
While the official confirmation regarding Rohit Sharma's participation in the first Test remains pending, it is almost certain that Bumrah will step into the leadership role for the series opener in Perth. As the series progresses, it will be fascinating to see how the team responds to the leadership change and whether the consistency in captaincy that Harbhajan Singh advocates will be embraced by the Indian team.
