Nitish Reddy Shines with Resilient Knock in Tough Debut Against Australia
Cricket fans were treated to a thrilling moment as Nitish Kumar Reddy made his Test debut for India in the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 series against Australia at Perth. Amidst challenging conditions, Reddy’s performance stood out as a beacon of hope for the Indian batting lineup, which faltered under pressure.
India’s innings began with significant setbacks, as early dismissals left the team reeling at 14/3. Facing a fiery Australian bowling attack led by Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, the Indian batters struggled to find their footing. It was at this juncture that the young all-rounder Reddy stepped in, displaying commendable grit and determination in his maiden Test innings. Coming in at number eight, Reddy faced the daunting task of stabilizing the innings and fending off relentless attacks from the Australian pacers.

Reddy’s innings was marked by his poise under pressure. He played some delightful strokes, including an uppercut six off his IPL skipper Cummins that showcased his confidence and skill. Partnering with Rishabh Pant, Reddy managed to stitch together a 48-run stand, providing some semblance of resistance. His 41 runs off 59 deliveries were the highest in India’s modest total of 150, a testament to his ability to perform under tough conditions.
While Reddy impressed, India’s overall batting performance left much to be desired. Apart from Pant, who scored 37, none of the other batters could make a significant contribution. The team’s struggle to counter Australia’s disciplined bowling attack highlighted recurring issues in the batting lineup.
On the bowling front, India showed promise as Jasprit Bumrah and debutant Harshit Rana struck early, dismantling Australia’s top order. Bumrah’s fiery spell included crucial wickets of Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja, keeping India in the hunt.
As the series progresses, Nitish Reddy’s resilient debut innings will likely serve as a learning experience and a foundation for future performances. While the Indian team faces an uphill battle to secure their spot in the World Test Championship final, Reddy’s emergence as a capable all-rounder adds a glimmer of optimism amidst the challenges. His debut is a reminder that even in adversity, moments of brilliance can shine through.
