Steelers' Cameron Heyward Avoids Making the Same Mistake as Cam Taylor-Britt Ahead of Commanders Clash
As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for their Week 10 matchup against the Washington Commanders, veteran defensive end Cameron Heyward is making sure not to repeat the mistake made earlier in the season by Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt. Back in Week 3, Taylor-Britt sparked controversy by labeling the Commanders’ offense as a "college offense" under rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. That remark didn’t sit well with Washington, and the Bengals were handed a 38-33 loss.
Heyward, on the other hand, is taking a much more respectful approach to the challenge the Commanders’ offense presents. On his "Not Just Football" podcast, Heyward was asked if he noticed the same tendencies that Taylor-Britt had pointed out. He wasted no time in shutting down any notion that the Commanders’ offense could be dismissed as something less than dangerous. "I would never say something stupid like that," Heyward said. "When you look at them, you have to respect that offense. They’re getting it done."

This season, the Commanders have proven they’re much more than a gimmick offense. Despite finishing 2023 with a disappointing 4-13 record, they’ve come out strong in 2024, leading the NFC East with a 7-2 record. Under the guidance of Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Washington has become one of the league's most potent offenses. They’re currently ranked third in both total yards (392.0 per game) and points (29.2 per game). Daniels, with 1,945 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and only two interceptions, has also shown impressive mobility, adding 459 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.
Heyward, who has seen plenty of high-level competition throughout his career, is well aware of what the Steelers’ defense is up against. Although Pittsburgh’s defense has been outstanding this season—allowing only 310.3 yards and 14.9 points per game—Heyward knows the Commanders' offense will present a serious challenge. "That offense is pretty special," Heyward remarked. "They don’t turn the ball over a lot. They have a solid group of playmakers with Brian Robinson, Austin Ekeler, and Jeremy McNichols, plus a big-time receiver in Terry McLaurin. And then you’ve got Jayden Daniels, who’s doing it all, throwing, running, and managing the game with poise."
As both teams prepare for a crucial Week 10 showdown, Heyward’s focus is on the task at hand. While the Steelers have made notable acquisitions, like adding wide receiver Mike Williams and pass rusher Preston Smith at the trade deadline, the Commanders’ defensive improvements—such as adding star cornerback Marshon Lattimore—are not to be overlooked. With both teams boasting formidable rosters, the Week 10 matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter that could shape the NFC playoff race. As Heyward pointed out, you can’t afford to underestimate the Washington Commanders; they’ve proven they know how to win games.
