Texas sophomore wide receiver Johntay Cook has officially left the Texas Longhorns football program, according to a report from Inside Texas. Cook, a highly-touted player from Texas’s 2023 recruiting class, came into the program as a five-star recruit with impressive potential, especially after committing alongside notable players like Arch Manning. Yet, Cook’s departure—though surprising for some fans—had been speculated in recent weeks.

This season, Cook had a modest contribution, recording 8 receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. As a result, other players in Texas’s deep receiving rotation, such as Isaiah Bond, DeAndre Moore, and Matthew Golden, have taken on more prominent roles. The depth at wide receiver, including freshmen Ryan Wingo and senior Silas Bolden, also left Cook with fewer opportunities to stand out.
