A Glimpse Into Bob Mortimer’s Life Beyond the Spotlight

Bob was born in Middlesbrough, where he grew up alongside his three brothers. Life was not without its challenges—his father tragically passed away in a car accident when Bob was just seven, an event that left a lasting impression. Around the same time, a young Bob accidentally set fire to his family home with a firework, an incident that perhaps foreshadowed his adventurous, albeit chaotic, spirit.
Football was Bob's first passion, and he even had trials with Middlesbrough FC. However, his dreams of playing professionally were cut short due to early-onset arthritis. Redirecting his energy, Bob pursued law, eventually becoming a solicitor for Southwark Council. Here, he earned the nickname "The Cockroach King" for his work on housing cases. His legal career took an unexpected turn when he met comedian Vic Reeves in the 1980s, leading to a lifelong partnership and the creation of iconic shows like Vic Reeves Big Night Out and Shooting Stars .
Off-screen, Mortimer faced significant health challenges. In 2015, he underwent life-saving heart surgery after discovering that his arteries were 95% blocked. Remarkably, he married his long-time partner, Lisa Matthews, just hours before the operation. The ceremony, attended only by their children, was a testament to their enduring love. The couple now resides in Tunbridge Wells with their two sons, Harry and Tom.
Mortimer’s health struggles didn’t end there. He battled shingles, a condition that left him temporarily unable to walk and significantly affected his muscle mass. Despite these setbacks, Bob has shown incredible resilience, often finding humor even in the darkest moments. His friend and co-star Paul Whitehouse played a pivotal role in his recovery, suggesting fishing as a therapeutic outlet, which later inspired their hit show, Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing .
