Air Canada Expands Fleet with Five Additional A220s to Support Growth and Sustainability
Air Canada has made a significant move to enhance its fleet, ordering five more Airbus A220-300 aircraft, bringing its total commitment to 65 units. This latest acquisition comes after the airline celebrated five years since its first delivery of the A220 in December 2019. With this new order, Air Canada continues its strategic fleet renewal plan that began with an initial order of 45 A220-300s back in 2016, followed by 15 more in 2022. The A220-300 aircraft, known for their fuel efficiency and modern design, have already proven to be a key asset for Air Canada.
As North America's first operator of the A220-300, Air Canada has successfully integrated the aircraft into its network, covering over 70 destinations. The A220's range, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort have allowed the airline to open new routes and better serve existing ones. Its Pratt & Whitney GTF engines deliver a remarkable 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions per seat, making it a vital part of Air Canada's commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the A220 is already capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with plans for 100% SAF compatibility by 2030.

John Di Bert, Air Canada's Executive Vice President and CFO, expressed the airline's satisfaction with the A220, stating that it has been instrumental in supporting the airline's profitable growth strategy. He also highlighted the importance of this aircraft to Canada’s aerospace sector, as the A220 is built in Mirabel, Quebec, near the airline’s Montreal headquarters. This order further strengthens Air Canada’s long-standing relationship with Airbus and solidifies its position as a leader in the North American aviation market.
The A220-300's spacious cabin, which offers the widest dimensions in its class, and its ability to accommodate 100 to 150 passengers make it ideal for Air Canada's diverse network. The aircraft’s range of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km) allows it to serve both short- and medium-haul routes with ease. This order of five additional A220-300s will further support Air Canada's growth and expansion efforts, as the airline continues to modernize its fleet and reduce its environmental footprint.
With nearly 900 A220 orders from 32 customers globally and close to 380 deliveries completed, the A220 is rapidly becoming a popular choice for airlines looking for a cost-effective, environmentally friendly aircraft. Air Canada’s expanding fleet of A220s will not only help the airline serve more destinations but also ensure it remains at the forefront of sustainable aviation practices.
As part of its continued investment in fleet modernization, Air Canada is also looking forward to receiving 26 A321XLRs, which will further enhance its Airbus fleet. The A220-300s will continue to play a crucial role in the airline’s growth plans, ensuring passengers enjoy a comfortable and sustainable travel experience for years to come.
