Arizona's Cold Front Brings a Cool Down, Winds, and a Big Temperature Shift
As we move into the second week of December, Arizona is experiencing a significant weather shift. After a warm and sunny start to the month, with temperatures well above average, a cold front is making its way through the state, bringing cooler air, gusty winds, and a change in the overall weather pattern.
Monday, December 9, 2024, saw the temperatures in the Valley soaring to a pleasant 74°F, continuing the streak of above-normal temperatures for the first nine days of the month. However, this warm spell is about to end as a cold front moves in from the north, set to pass through the state by Monday night and early Tuesday morning. As the cold front pushes through, we can expect winds to pick up, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph in some areas, especially in Northern Arizona.
The cooler air will follow, dropping temperatures significantly. By Tuesday morning, overnight lows will dip into the 40s in the Valley, marking a noticeable cool down from the mild evenings we've enjoyed lately. Meanwhile, parts of Northern Arizona will experience much colder conditions, with temperatures dipping into the teens and 20s. In the high country, a few spots might even experience single-digit temperatures.

As a result, the Valley will experience a noticeable chill, with daytime highs in Phoenix expected to reach just 68°F on Tuesday—still slightly above the seasonal average of 67°F, but a significant drop from the 70s. Fortunately, the cool weather won’t last too long. By mid-week, temperatures will rebound into the low 70s, maintaining a comfortable range through Friday.
In addition to the cool temperatures, the winds will be a major feature of this weather system. A wind advisory has been issued for parts of the state, including cities along the Colorado River and northern regions, where gusts could reach up to 45 mph. These winds will bring a wind chill factor, making it feel much colder than the actual temperature, especially in the high country, where it may feel like single digits early Tuesday.
For those in the Valley, overnight lows will remain chilly for the next few days, with temperatures dropping into the 30s and 40s in the outlying areas. The coldest morning will likely be Wednesday, with clear skies and calm winds contributing to the cool temperatures. A freeze watch is in effect for parts of Gila, Pinal, and Pima counties, including areas like Casa Grande and Globe, where temperatures could fall below freezing and damage sensitive vegetation and outdoor plumbing.
Despite the chilly start to the week, Arizona residents can look forward to a quick recovery. As high pressure builds back into the region by Wednesday, temperatures will rise back into the 70s, making the cool down a short-lived one. However, the dry conditions persist, as no rain or snow is forecast for the remainder of the week.
This cold front marks a change in Arizona's weather, with cooler temperatures, strong winds, and clear skies providing a sharp contrast to the warm start of the month. So, while it’s time to bundle up for a few days, the warmth will return soon enough, giving Arizonans a bit of everything in terms of winter weather this week.
