Emily Blunt’s Surprising Take on Cillian Murphy: 'The Worst Celebrity'

Emily Blunt recently shared an unexpected view on her Oppenheimer co-star, Cillian Murphy, labeling him as “the worst celebrity in the world” during an interview on 60 Minutes . Her comments came as part of a candid conversation where Blunt, known for her roles in Edge of Tomorrow and A Quiet Place , gave a deeper look into her relationship with Murphy, the Irish actor who portrayed J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster film.
Blunt was discussing Murphy’s humble and self-effacing nature, which she believes contrasts with his extraordinary talent. In the interview, Blunt noted that while Murphy may be one of the greatest actors of his generation, he struggles to accept compliments or acknowledge his own success. “No, I don’t think so. I don’t know if any of the great actors say that about themselves," Blunt shared. "I feel he is always in search, looking ahead, looking off to the horizon. He's looking at 'What else can I do? How far can I push it?'” she added, emphasizing Murphy's constant drive for improvement.
When asked if Murphy, who has earned critical acclaim and numerous awards for his portrayal of the atomic bomb’s creator, stays in character even off-set, Blunt revealed that Murphy switches between his on-screen persona and his real self with impressive ease. She recalled moments of laughter on set, where she and Murphy would joke around, including one particularly funny moment where they created a humorous alter ego for his character, complete with aviator sunglasses.
Despite calling him "the worst celebrity," Blunt clarified that she was speaking in jest. "He's the best actor in the world and the worst celebrity in the world," she said. Blunt made it clear that her affection for Murphy goes beyond his acting prowess. “He’s my favourite actor I’ve ever worked with,” she said. “Because he is unparalleled in what he can do and how he pulls you in. The whole room crackles with a sort of life force when you work with him.”
This light-hearted exchange revealed a deep admiration for Murphy’s craft, while simultaneously highlighting his humble and somewhat aloof personality. It’s clear that Emily Blunt holds Murphy in high regard, not only as an actor but also as a person.
