Former Chinese Football Coach Li Tie Sentenced to 20 Years for Corruption

Li Tie's fall from grace began earlier this year when he admitted to accepting bribes totaling over $16 million between 2015 and 2021. These illicit activities spanned his time as an assistant coach for Hebei China Fortune Club to his tenure as head coach of the Chinese national team. Li's offenses reportedly involved selecting players and favoring football clubs in exchange for substantial financial gains. In a televised anti-corruption documentary, he expressed remorse, stating, “I should have stayed on the right path. Certain practices were common in football, but I was wrong.”
The crackdown on football corruption isn’t new in China. Over a decade ago, similar investigations exposed corrupt practices among officials and players. However, the scale of this recent probe is unprecedented, with multiple Chinese Football Association (CFA) officials, including former president Chen Xuyuan, also receiving harsh sentences. Chen, who was tasked with revitalizing Chinese football, was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this year for accepting $11 million in bribes.
