Stanley Recalls Millions of Travel Mugs Over Burn Hazard
In a recent development, the iconic Stanley brand has issued a recall of nearly 2.6 million stainless steel travel mugs following reports of potential burn hazards caused by defective lids. These popular mugs, known for their durability and style, have been at the center of a safety concern that has left many users wary.
The recall specifically targets the Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs in 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. sizes. The issue arises from a problem with the lids, which can shrink under heat exposure, leading them to detach unexpectedly. This poses a significant risk for users, especially when handling hot liquids. According to Stanley and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the company has received 91 reports of these faulty lids, with 38 cases resulting in burn injuries. Of these, 16 incidents and two injuries were reported in the United States alone, with 11 individuals requiring medical attention globally.

Sold at major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Dick’s Sporting Goods over the past eight years, these mugs retailed between $20 and $50. Customers can identify affected products by specific identification numbers printed at the bottom. Stanley has urged consumers to stop using the recalled mugs immediately and to contact the company for a free replacement lid.
This recall comes amidst Stanley’s meteoric rise in popularity, fueled in part by viral trends on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The brand, which has been around for over a century, experienced a significant boom in sales in recent years, especially for its "Quencher" water bottles. However, this recall—and previous allegations about lead content in some products—has slightly tarnished the brand’s glowing reputation.
Stanley, for its part, has acknowledged the issue and expressed its commitment to safety and quality. Customers affected by this recall can visit the Stanley website or contact their customer service to request a free replacement lid. Despite this setback, Stanley continues to assure its customers that their products are built for life and remain a trusted name in the drinkware market.
If you own one of the recalled travel mugs, take immediate action to ensure your safety and follow the steps provided by Stanley to get your replacement lid. Stay informed and stay safe!
