Gabriel Bortoleto Shines in F2 Sprint, Extends Lead Before Final Showdown
The Formula 2 championship witnessed a thrilling turn of events during the sprint race at the Yas Marina Circuit, with Gabriel Bortoleto demonstrating a poised and masterful performance. Starting ninth on the grid due to the reverse order rule, Bortoleto capitalized on early chaos and strategic overtakes to finish second, significantly bolstering his lead over rival Isack Hadjar ahead of the final race of the season.
Bortoleto, who leads the championship with a narrow 5.5-point margin, had his work cut out for him as Hadjar began two places ahead in seventh. However, Hadjar’s miscalculation at the first corner saw him drop positions after a collision, opening a window for the Brazilian to make a decisive move. By avoiding early accidents and maintaining a calculated pace, Bortoleto quickly climbed the standings, ultimately overtaking key competitors with impressive precision.

“I was just trying to stay clear of trouble,” Bortoleto remarked. “When I saw the smoke ahead, I stayed calm and made my moves when opportunities came. Everything aligned perfectly.”
By the sixth lap, Bortoleto had surged into second place, overtaking seasoned contenders such as Rafael Villagomez and Kush Maini. Despite a strong push, he finished two seconds behind race winner Pepe Marti. Meanwhile, Hadjar recovered only to sixth, leaving Bortoleto in a favorable position heading into the season’s final and deciding race.
Now starting from second on the grid in the feature race, Bortoleto exudes confidence, crediting his car’s remarkable performance and his recent form. His only remaining competitor for the title, Hadjar, faces increasing pressure, a factor evident in their post-race interviews. As rivals acknowledge Bortoleto’s dominance, the Brazilian focuses on minimizing mistakes—a lesson learned from a strategic misstep in Qatar that cost him crucial points.
With the championship battle reaching its climax, all eyes are on the young talent. A win or a solid finish in Sunday’s feature race could crown him the Formula 2 champion, setting the stage for his much-anticipated debut in Formula 1 with Sauber in 2025.
