Gen Z Ditches Tradition: Christmas Dinner Gets a Modern Twist with Fried Chicken, Pizza, and Cheesecake

When it comes to Christmas traditions, it seems like Gen Z is ready to break the mold. This generation, ranging from 18 to 27 years old, is stepping away from the classic turkey and Christmas pudding, opting for a festive meal that's more aligned with their modern tastes. A recent study reveals that 78% of young people are eager for a change, turning their backs on the old-fashioned Christmas dinner in favor of food that's a little more trendy—and Instagram-worthy.

Fried chicken and pizza are at the top of their list, with 30% of Gen Z preferring crispy fried chicken over the traditional turkey, and 24% willing to swap turkey for a slice of pizza. When it comes to dessert, cheesecake leads the charge, with 33% of the generation voting for this creamy treat, followed by chocolate gateau (29%) and ice cream (25%). This new take on Christmas meals isn't just about convenience; it's about keeping up with trends and impressing followers on social media. 67% of Gen Z says that having a festive meal that looks good enough to share on Instagram is an important part of the experience.

In fact, many traditional dishes are now viewed as "dated." For example, 64% of young people are ready to say goodbye to Christmas pudding, while other staples like mince pies and mulled wine aren't doing much better in the popularity stakes, with 29% of Gen Z saying they dislike them. Even cranberry sauce and sprouts are getting the cold shoulder, with 24% and 21% of young people expressing their distaste for these holiday classics.

However, there's one thing that still remains non-negotiable: the Christmas pudding. Despite their desire to shake up the menu, 61% of Gen Z says they still expect their parents to serve the traditional dessert—whether they like it or not.

Supermarket giant Aldi, who conducted the study, has recognized the shift in tastes, and in response, they're launching a Christmas Pudding Exchange Service, allowing customers to swap out their traditional puddings for something more modern. Still, despite the trend toward newer food options, Aldi expects to sell a staggering 2.3 million Christmas puddings this year, highlighting just how much the older generation is still holding on to the festive classics.

So, as Christmas approaches, it’s clear that Gen Z is embracing a more contemporary holiday feast—one that’s both delicious and visually appealing enough to make its way onto social media feeds across the world. Whether you're team turkey or team pizza, this generation is sure to make their mark on how we celebrate the holiday season.
