George Kittle Weighs In on Brock Purdy's Contract Situation
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle recently opened up about the ongoing discussions surrounding quarterback Brock Purdy's potential contract extension. As the 2024 season continues, there have been mixed opinions about whether the 49ers should offer Purdy a lucrative long-term deal. Some analysts have questioned whether Purdy is truly worth a massive contract, especially considering that he's still young and learning. However, Kittle was candid in his support of his quarterback, highlighting the impressive level at which Purdy has been playing.
During a recent press conference, Kittle addressed the contract debate head-on, emphasizing that Purdy has consistently performed at an elite level. "Brock has done nothing but play at a very, very high level," Kittle stated. He pointed out that the beauty of contracts in the NFL is that they are often tied to performance, and when a player outperforms others in the league, it becomes difficult not to demand a similar contract. Kittle's comments seemed to reference the situation of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who reset the quarterback market earlier this year with a massive four-year, $240 million extension. Given Purdy’s success with the 49ers, including two NFC Championship appearances and a Super Bowl appearance, Kittle’s perspective is that Purdy’s performance warrants a similarly significant deal.

While Purdy has been labeled as a "game manager" by some critics, Kittle is clear in his belief that the 49ers' signal caller is far more than that. Despite the team facing a series of injuries, Purdy has led San Francisco through tough situations and demonstrated that he’s capable of handling the spotlight. Through the first 13 games of the 2024 season, Purdy has thrown 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions, maintaining a solid 65.3 adjusted QBR, ranking 10th among qualified quarterbacks.
Kittle also expressed his belief in Purdy’s potential growth. "He’s not a kid, but he has a lot of growth and maturity left in front of him too," Kittle said. He anticipates that Purdy will continue to mature both as a player and a leader. The 49ers’ quarterback, who will turn 25 in December, is already showing signs of taking on more leadership responsibilities. Kittle expects that next year, Purdy will return as an even more vocal leader for the team, further solidifying his role as the long-term face of the franchise.
As Purdy's contract is currently set to remain at a relatively inexpensive rate through 2025, it remains to be seen whether the 49ers will offer him a new deal this offseason. Given his remarkable achievements so far and his continued potential, there is little doubt that Purdy is positioning himself to be one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL for years to come. With Kittle’s endorsement, it seems likely that the 49ers will soon have to make a tough decision about what kind of contract extension to offer their star quarterback.
