Governor Abbott Launches Billboard Campaign to Deter Dangerous Migrant Journeys
Governor Greg Abbott has unveiled a new initiative aimed at discouraging illegal immigration by placing billboards across Mexico and Central America. The campaign, announced during a press conference at Wall Ranch in Eagle Pass, Texas, highlights the severe dangers migrants face when attempting to cross the border illegally. Governor Abbott emphasized the grim reality of human trafficking, sexual assault, and other threats awaiting many who embark on such journeys.

The billboards, written in multiple languages including Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian, are strategically placed in countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, as well as along the Texas-Mexico border. Messages warn potential migrants of the physical and emotional tolls their journeys might exact, particularly for women and children, who are often victimized by human smugglers, known as coyotes. One billboard starkly reads, “Your wife and daughter will pay for the trip with their bodies. Coyotes lie. Don’t put your family at risk.”
Governor Abbott explained that this campaign complements existing border security efforts under Operation Lone Star, which has included the construction of physical barriers and the deployment of law enforcement resources. He stressed the necessity of addressing illegal immigration at its source, aiming to stop journeys before they begin.
The initiative also seeks to raise awareness about the unspoken crisis of sexual assault impacting migrants. Speakers at the event, including ranchers Kimberly and Martin Wall, shared chilling accounts of rape trees, where smugglers assault victims and hang their clothing as grim trophies. Such stories underline the brutal realities faced by migrants and the dangers lurking along the border.
While the campaign has drawn attention to the human cost of illegal crossings, it also highlights a broader strategy to collaborate with federal efforts. Abbott expressed hope for renewed support from the incoming Trump administration, pledging to continue robust measures to secure the border and promote lawful immigration pathways.
This bold move underscores the state’s commitment to border safety and the protection of vulnerable populations. Governor Abbott’s message is clear: migration through illegal means is perilous and fraught with consequences, both for individuals and their families.
