Drafted 11th overall by the Islanders in 2018, Wahlstrom once showed promise as a scoring threat but has struggled to live up to expectations. His reduced ice time, career-low averages, and a lack of physical presence this season have made his struggles glaring. Wahlstrom’s decline from being a potential top-six forward to a fringe player raises questions about his long-term potential in the NHL.
By waiving Engvall and Wahlstrom, the Islanders aim to free up valuable cap space, shedding approximately $2.15 million combined, to activate their injured stars.
