Premier League Referee David Coote Fired After Conduct Scandal

David Coote, a referee in the Premier League, has been dismissed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a serious investigation into his actions. Coote, 42, was initially suspended on November 11, 2024, after a video surfaced, allegedly showing him making derogatory comments about Liverpool FC and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp. This video, which caused a stir on social media, featured Coote using expletive-laden language to criticize Klopp and Liverpool's performances, sparking an immediate investigation.

The situation escalated further when another video emerged, purportedly filmed during the summer’s Euro 2024, which seemed to show Coote sniffing a white powder. This footage raised additional concerns about Coote's behavior and professionalism, and both UEFA and the Football Association (FA) launched their own investigations into the matter. The PGMOL's decision to sack Coote was made after concluding that his actions were a severe breach of his employment contract, leaving his position "untenable."

Coote’s controversial comments regarding Klopp and Liverpool dated back to a Premier League match in July 2020, where Klopp had criticized Coote’s refereeing after a 1-1 draw with Burnley. Coote, in the video, used offensive language to describe Klopp as “arrogant” and belittled Liverpool’s performance. Though the video’s authenticity was not independently verified by BBC, it played a pivotal role in the investigation. Following the viral circulation of the video, the PGMOL acted swiftly to suspend Coote, pending the full inquiry.

Adding to the controversy were allegations from The Sun, which reported a series of messages in which Coote allegedly discussed giving a yellow card to Leeds defender Ezgjan Alioski before a Championship match in 2019. Coote denied these claims, calling them false and defamatory, insisting that his personal life never interfered with his impartiality on the field.

Coote, who began officiating in the Premier League in 2018, had previously built a solid reputation as a referee and VAR official, even overseeing significant matches, including the 2023 Carabao Cup final. However, these recent events have severely damaged his career, leading to his immediate termination by PGMOL.

Despite the severity of the situation, the PGMOL emphasized that they would continue to support Coote through this challenging time, underlining that he has the right to appeal the decision. This decision marks a dramatic fall from grace for a referee once considered among the top officials in English football.
