RFK Jr. Faces Scrutiny on Capitol Hill as Trump’s Health Secretary Nominee
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, has commenced pivotal meetings with Republican senators on Capitol Hill this week. These discussions mark the beginning of his confirmation journey, as Kennedy seeks to secure support for his nomination from a GOP-controlled Senate. With over two dozen meetings planned, Kennedy faces questions about his controversial views on vaccines, agriculture, and abortion.
Kennedy, known for his history of vaccine skepticism, is anticipated to address concerns about public health policies. Key Senate figures like Majority Leader John Thune, Majority Whip John Barrasso, and Finance Committee Chair Mike Crapo are expected to play significant roles in his nomination process. While Kennedy has clarified his stance on the polio vaccine, recent remarks from outgoing GOP leader Mitch McConnell, a polio survivor, signal a tough road ahead. McConnell warned against undermining confidence in proven vaccines, calling such rhetoric "dangerous."

His past comments comparing hog farms to terrorism and criticizing GMO crops have sparked unease among farm-state senators like Chuck Grassley. While some Republicans support Kennedy’s push for healthier, sustainable food systems, others warn against policies that could harm agricultural industries.
Kennedy’s confirmation may test Trump’s influence over Senate Republicans, particularly given Kennedy’s background as a Democrat with views that diverge from conservative orthodoxy. With Republicans holding a narrow majority, Kennedy needs near-unified GOP backing, as a handful of defections could block his nomination.
