Russia's Spy Chief Claims Ukraine War Close to End as Putin's Goals Near Achievement
Russia has made it clear that the war in Ukraine will not end until President Vladimir Putin’s objectives are met, either through military action or negotiations. This statement comes as Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Chief, Sergei Naryshkin, claims the nation is nearing the fulfillment of its strategic goals in Ukraine. Speaking to a Kremlin-affiliated publication, Naryshkin emphasized that Russia holds the upper hand in all areas, asserting that the situation on the frontlines is increasingly unfavorable for Ukraine.
The ongoing conflict, which began in February 2022, was initially expected to be a swift operation. However, Ukrainian resistance has significantly altered the course of the war, leading Russia to scale back its initial objectives. Despite this, Naryshkin insists that Russia’s military forces are on the verge of achieving their goals, and the Ukrainian army is reportedly close to collapse. He claims that the "strategic initiative" is firmly in Russia's control, while Kyiv's ability to continue the fight is weakening.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov echoed this sentiment, stating that the war will only conclude once the specific goals set by Putin are met. These include Ukraine’s withdrawal from the four eastern regions claimed by Russia—Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. Kyiv, however, has firmly rejected these demands, viewing them as a form of surrender. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has suggested the possibility of a ceasefire, offering NATO membership for unoccupied parts of the country as a potential basis for negotiations. This would allow Ukraine to negotiate for the return of the occupied territories later, though the idea remains controversial.
Amid these developments, former U.S. President Donald Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations between the two sides, offering his mediation. He has long advocated for an end to the conflict, claiming that both sides are interested in a deal to stop the "madness." Trump believes that now is a critical moment for Putin to act, with China potentially playing a role in facilitating a resolution.
While the world watches closely, both sides continue to suffer immense casualties, with Ukrainian and Russian losses mounting steadily. President Zelenskyy recently revealed that nearly 43,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died, while Russian fatalities are estimated to be around 198,000. These staggering numbers highlight the human toll of the conflict, which has displaced millions and caused significant destruction across the region.
As the war drags on, it’s clear that Russia is not willing to back down without achieving its goals, while Ukraine continues to hold firm on its territorial integrity and sovereignty. The question now is whether diplomatic efforts can overcome the entrenched positions on both sides, or if the battlefield will ultimately decide the outcome of this devastating war.
