Trump Calls for Immediate Resolution to Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Donald Trump, the U.S. president-elect, has made a strong appeal to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, calling for an "immediate settlement." Taking to social media, Trump urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to act decisively, stating that both sides should "stop the madness" and commence negotiations. Trump also emphasized his personal connection to Putin, expressing confidence that the Russian leader could seize this moment to bring peace. He even suggested that China could play a role in facilitating this process, asserting that "the world is waiting."

Appearing on NBC’s Meet The Press , Trump confirmed he is actively working to resolve the nearly three-year-old conflict before taking office in January. He suggested a possible reevaluation of U.S. military aid to Ukraine, leaving open the possibility of reductions, and reiterated his stance on NATO, emphasizing that the U.S. could reconsider its membership if allies fail to meet their financial commitments. However, Trump maintained that he would remain with NATO if member states “pay their bills” and treat the U.S. fairly.

This call for peace contrasts sharply with the approach of the incumbent Biden administration, which has been more cautious about pushing for a ceasefire. Over the weekend, Trump held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron during the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Zelenskyy described the talks as constructive but emphasized that Ukraine needs a “just and robust peace” underpinned by effective guarantees to prevent future aggression. He also revealed the heavy toll of the conflict on Ukraine, citing the loss of 43,000 soldiers and over 370,000 injuries since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

The Kremlin has expressed its openness to negotiations, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterating Moscow’s stance. Meanwhile, Western officials report record casualties on both sides in recent months due to intense fighting. Trump’s direct intervention marks a bold attempt to address one of the world’s most pressing crises, signaling his intent to take a more hands-on approach to foreign policy even before officially assuming office.
