West Bromwich Albion 2-2 Sheffield United: A Thrilling Championship Draw
On a wet and wild afternoon at The Hawthorns, West Bromwich Albion played out an exciting 2-2 draw against Sheffield United, a result that sent the Blades back to the top of the Championship table. It was a match that had all the elements of a classic, and although both teams will likely feel they missed out on all three points, they showed plenty of character and resilience in what was a memorable encounter.
West Brom took the early initiative, displaying some quality football in the first 30 minutes. Their hard work paid off in the 24th minute when Torbjorn Heggem powered home a header from Alex Mowatt’s corner, marking his first goal for the Baggies. Albion looked in control at that point, but Sheffield United wasn’t going to make it easy. In a dramatic two-minute spell, the visitors turned the game on its head. Callum O'Hare equalized in the 35th minute after a scrappy ball from Harrison Burrows found its way to him. Just moments later, Tyrese Campbell put Sheffield United ahead, connecting with another Burrows cross that was too good to ignore. The Blades’ quick-fire double stunned the home side and put them in the driver’s seat going into the break.

However, West Brom, known for their drawn-out affairs this season, refused to give up. The second half saw them come out with renewed vigor despite the worsening weather conditions brought by Storm Darragh. Their persistence paid off in the 62nd minute, albeit with a hefty dose of luck. Tom Fellows’ cross from the right was meant to be a delivery into the box but took an outrageous deflection off Gus Hamer, looping over Sheffield’s keeper, Michael Cooper, and into the net. It was a bizarre goal, but one that gave Albion a much-needed point, salvaging what seemed like a lost cause.
Despite late pressure from both sides, neither could find the winner. Sheffield United will likely be content with a point as it sent them back to the top of the league, maintaining their unbeaten run that now stretches to eight games. For West Brom, it was their 10th draw in 11 matches, which has become a theme of their season. However, they demonstrated resilience and character, qualities that Carlos Corberán will undoubtedly take as positives despite the frustration of another draw.
Sheffield United's manager, Chris Wilder, praised his side's ability to bounce back, especially after going behind. He was quick to highlight the impact of the younger players on the team, who handled the pressure well in difficult conditions. For West Brom, it’s another game in which they failed to secure a win at home, and while they may have deserved more, they need to convert these performances into victories if they want to break into the play-off places.
The match provided plenty of action, with both teams creating chances and playing with intensity. It was an entertaining contest that certainly could have gone either way, and while the draw doesn’t change much in the grand scheme, it was a fitting spectacle for Championship fans to enjoy.
