WI Clinch 1st ODI with Rutherford’s Record-Breaking Ton
The West Indies ended their 11-match losing streak against Bangladesh in spectacular fashion, securing a five-wicket victory in the first ODI of their series on December 8, 2024, at Basseterre. The hero of the day was Sherfane Rutherford, whose scintillating maiden ODI century powered the hosts to chase down a formidable target of 295 with 14 balls to spare.
The game began with Bangladesh opting to bat first, and they posted a competitive 294/6. Tanzid Hasan’s confident 60 and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 74 were the anchors of their innings. Late fireworks from Mahmudullah, who smashed an unbeaten 50 off 44 balls, and Jaker Ali’s quick 48 added valuable runs in the final overs. Romario Shepherd was the standout bowler for West Indies, claiming 3 for 51.

In reply, the West Indies faced early trouble as their top order crumbled under Bangladesh’s pace attack. Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Nahid Rana dismissed Brandon King and Evin Lewis in quick succession, leaving the hosts struggling at 42/2. Shai Hope and Rutherford then steadied the ship with a crucial 99-run partnership. Hope’s calm 86 off 88 balls provided the foundation, but it was Rutherford who stole the spotlight.
Rutherford turned the game on its head with a breathtaking 113 off just 80 deliveries, studded with seven fours and eight sixes. Despite being hit on the helmet twice, he displayed remarkable composure and aggression, reaching his century in dramatic fashion with six overthrows and following it with consecutive sixes. His partnership with Justin Greaves, which added 95 runs in just 57 balls, ensured the West Indies stayed ahead in the chase. Greaves sealed the victory with an unbeaten 41 off 31 balls.
Rutherford’s innings was a record-breaking feat, making him the fastest West Indian to achieve six fifty-plus scores in his first eight ODI innings. His knock etched his name alongside greats like Gordon Greenidge and Chris Gayle.
This thrilling win not only gave West Indies a 1-0 lead in the series but also signaled a resurgence in their ODI performance. With momentum on their side, the team will look to build on this success in the upcoming matches.
