Winter Weather Travel Advisory Issued for Southern Ontario - Prepare for Hazardous Conditions
As the holidays approach, winter weather is creating some challenging conditions for travelers in Southern Ontario. A winter weather travel advisory has been issued for several regions, including Sault Ste. Marie and areas to the east, such as Blind River, Elliot Lake, Manitoulin Island, Sudbury, and North Bay. The advisory warns that hazardous driving conditions are expected as a low-pressure system moves through the area.
The snow is expected to start tonight and intensify tomorrow morning, continuing through the afternoon hours. According to Environment Canada, areas near the North Channel and Georgian Bay could see heavier snow accumulation, potentially reaching 10 cm by Monday night. In addition to snow, there is a risk of freezing drizzle later in the evening, which could make surfaces slippery and travel even more treacherous. The snow will taper off on Monday evening, but travelers should still expect poor visibility in areas of heavier snowfall.

It’s not just the Sault Ste. Marie region that is affected. A winter weather advisory is also in effect for areas north of the city, including Montreal River Harbour, Wawa, and beyond. In these regions, the heaviest snowfall is anticipated Sunday night, with conditions improving throughout Monday.
Motorists should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions, with highways, roads, parking lots, and walkways becoming difficult to navigate due to the accumulating snow. Environment Canada is advising people to adjust their travel plans accordingly and exercise caution when driving in these conditions. If visibility becomes reduced while driving, it’s important to slow down, keep an eye out for tail lights, and be prepared to stop.
It’s also worth noting that other regions in Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), will experience snow on Monday. Snowfall accumulations of 5 to 10 cm are expected in areas like Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, and Vaughan. For some locations, the snow may be heavy at times, reducing visibility and making travel hazardous. As always, it’s crucial to monitor the weather conditions and adjust your travel plans if necessary.
With the holiday season upon us, it’s important to stay updated on the weather and take all necessary precautions when heading out. For the latest weather updates and travel advisories, be sure to check Environment Canada’s alerts and forecasts. Stay safe out there!
