Alexis Vega's Double Leads Toluca to 4-2 Victory Over Tijuana
Toluca began their Clausura 2025 campaign in impressive fashion with a 4-2 win against Tijuana at the Estadio Caliente, despite a late surge from the hosts. The star of the match was undoubtedly Alexis Vega, who marked his debut with the coveted number 9 jersey by scoring a sensational brace. His performance, along with goals from Paulinho and Helinho, ensured a solid start for the Red Devils in their quest for the new season.
The game unfolded with early intensity. Toluca made their move in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by Tijuana in midfield. Paulinho picked up a loose ball and delivered a perfect cross to Vega, who made no mistake with his header, putting Toluca ahead 1-0. Despite controlling possession, Tijuana struggled to break down the Toluca defense, and they went into the break trailing by one goal.

Tijuana showed resilience after halftime and managed to equalize in the 52nd minute. José Raúl Zúñiga's strike leveled the score at 1-1, giving the home crowd hope that their team could mount a comeback. However, Toluca responded swiftly. A brilliant run from Ricardo Angulo led to a cross into the box, where Alexis Vega reappeared to score again, this time with a clinical finish, putting Toluca back in the lead at 2-1.
Just 18 minutes later, Toluca extended their advantage when Helinho capitalized on a fast counterattack. The Brazilian forward cut inside and fired a low shot past Tijuana's goalkeeper, Toño RodrÃguez, to make it 3-1. The Red Devils looked to be cruising to a comfortable victory, but Tijuana showed signs of life in the 79th minute. A towering cross from Johan Julio found Emanuel Reynoso, who managed to bundle the ball over the line to pull Tijuana within one goal at 3-2.
The match was far from over, and Tijuana's hope for an equalizer was brief. Just four minutes after Reynoso's goal, Paulinho scored Toluca's fourth and final goal of the match, sealing the 4-2 victory. The Brazilian forward's goal marked a successful debut for Toluca under new coach Antonio Mohamed, who must have been pleased with the team's attacking performance, despite some nervous moments at the back.
This crucial three points for Toluca will serve as a strong foundation for the rest of their campaign, while Tijuana will have to regroup and focus on their next match. In their upcoming fixture, Toluca will face Rayados at home on January 18, while Tijuana will travel to face América.
