Brighton Rejects £54m Bid for Kaoru Mitoma from Saudi's Al Nassr

Brighton & Hove Albion has firmly rejected a £54 million (€65 million) bid for their star winger, Kaoru Mitoma, from Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr. The Japanese international has been a standout performer for the Seagulls since his arrival, and despite the substantial offer, it’s understood that Brighton is not willing to part with him.

Mitoma’s value has skyrocketed since joining Brighton in 2021 from Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale for a relatively modest fee of £2.7 million. After a loan spell at Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium, he returned to Brighton and quickly became a key player under manager Roberto De Zerbi. He’s made 92 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals, and this season alone has scored five goals and provided three assists in 23 Premier League games.

Al Nassr, who recently secured a £64 million deal for Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, is looking to further bolster their squad with young, talented players rather than relying on aging stars. With Cristiano Ronaldo already at the club, Al Nassr is aiming to challenge for titles in the Saudi Pro League, and Mitoma is viewed as a key piece to strengthen their attacking options.

However, Brighton's resolve is strong. Despite the big-money offer, the club is focused on their ambitions for European qualification and does not want to let go of their star winger, especially not in the middle of a season where he is integral to their setup. Brighton's manager, Fabian Hurzeler, has praised Mitoma's qualities, acknowledging his exceptional speed, one-on-one ability, and knack for finding solutions in tight spaces.

The Seagulls have built a reputation for resisting low-ball offers in recent years, notably when they turned down several bids for Moisés Caicedo before eventually selling him to Chelsea for a British record £115 million. It’s clear that Brighton's policy is to hold out for significant offers when selling key players, but only if the price and circumstances are right.

While the £54 million offer from Al Nassr was turned down, rumors suggest the Saudi club could return with an even higher bid, possibly in the region of £90 million. If Brighton decides to accept such an offer, it would go down as one of the biggest transfers in Premier League history, but for now, it seems the club is unwilling to part with their prized winger.

For Mitoma, his future remains up in the air, but for the time being, Brighton’s stance appears clear: they are not ready to let go of the 27-year-old star.
