Disney'sMoana 2Faces $10 Billion Copyright Lawsuit
Disney's Moana 2 , a sequel that's already smashing box office records with nearly $1 billion in global revenue, has sparked a heated copyright lawsuit. Animator Buck Woodall alleges that Disney stole significant elements of his screenplay, Bucky , to create Moana and its sequel. The legal battle, revived after being dismissed years ago due to statute limitations, claims striking similarities between Woodall's work and Disney's Polynesian epics.

Woodall's lawsuit, filed in California federal court, accuses Disney of lifting key storylines and visual elements. He alleges that Bucky , written in 2003, shares notable parallels with Moana . Both narratives feature a teenager from a Polynesian village who defies parental expectations, undertakes a daring voyage, and encounters spiritual entities embodied in animals. Specific details, such as a journey beginning with a turtle, a symbolic necklace, and a demigod adorned with tattoos and a hook, are central to both stories. Woodall claims these elements were included in materials he submitted to Jenny Marchick, a development executive with connections to Disney at the time.
While Disney has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that Moana was independently created, the lawsuit alleges otherwise. Woodall contends that his materials were shared internally at Disney Animation before Moana ’s development began. The legal dispute is further fueled by Woodall’s demand for damages amounting to 2.5% of Moana ’s revenue—approximately $10 billion—and a court order to halt further infringement.
