Foxtel's Price Hike and Service Discontinuation in Remote Areas: What You Need to Know
If you're a Foxtel subscriber, brace yourselves for some changes coming your way this March. Foxtel recently announced a price increase for their ‘Platinum’ and ‘Platinum with Netflix’ packages, which will see a hike of $2 to $3 per month. This move comes just a few months after their last price adjustment in September, which saw the Foxtel Plus package reach $73 per month, and the Foxtel Plus with Netflix pack, including Platinum Plus, go up to $145. For many subscribers, this marks another frustrating increase, but Foxtel has defended the hike by emphasizing that it is necessary to continue investing in technology and providing top-tier entertainment and live sports. They also highlight an exciting lineup for 2025, featuring a mix of global favorites and new Foxtel Originals.
However, there’s more to this announcement than just the price increase. Foxtel has revealed significant changes for customers in very remote regions of Australia. Starting on March 3, 2025, Foxtel will hold exclusive rights to all Foxtel Group content in these areas, including services like Binge, Kayo Sports, Flash, and LifeStyle, which will no longer be available. This means that if you're in a location classified as "very remote" by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, you’ll no longer have access to these streaming services. Foxtel will become the sole provider for content in these regions, which is a significant shift for many remote customers who rely on a variety of streaming options.

To make matters more complex, from the same date, Foxtel will also change how their Satellite TV service is supported in these areas. Customers who have been using Satellite Foxtel TV will now have to shift to an "owner install" service and will no longer have access to a professional technician for support. This is yet another move that could add frustration for customers already dealing with increasing costs and service changes.
While Foxtel assures customers in these remote areas that they will be contacted ahead of time and offered competitive rates for Foxtel subscriptions, it’s clear that these changes are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline their services and reduce costs. Whether these moves will result in a stronger position for Foxtel or further push away subscribers remains to be seen, but for now, it seems like the company is doubling down on its focus in specific regions, leaving behind a significant portion of the audience.
In a broader context, these moves come amid Foxtel’s ongoing transition under new ownership. DAZN, a sports streaming company, is expected to complete its acquisition of Foxtel later this year, signaling a potential shift in the company’s future direction. As DAZN takes over, some worry about the long-term future of non-sports content on Foxtel, especially with major shows like HBO's programming likely being phased out in favor of more sports-centric offerings.
So, if you’re a Foxtel subscriber, keep an eye on these changes. The price hike, loss of streaming options in remote areas, and ongoing shifts in the company’s ownership structure are all factors that could significantly impact your viewing experience moving forward.
