Hawaii Braces for Severe Weather as Powerful Storm Approaches
A strong winter storm system is making its way toward Hawaii, prompting multiple severe weather alerts across the state. The HNN First Alert Weather Team has declared a First Alert Weather Day from Wednesday night through Friday morning , warning residents to prepare for potentially dangerous conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for all the main Hawaiian islands, effective from Wednesday evening through Friday morning. This means heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding , especially in low-lying areas and near streams. Urban flooding is also a concern, as rapid runoff could overwhelm drainage systems.
In addition to the heavy rains, a High Wind Watch is in place across the state. Forecasters predict strong southwest winds ranging from 20 to 35 miles per hour , with gusts reaching up to 55 mph . These winds will be strongest in windward and mauka areas of Kauai and Oahu , but Maui County and Hawaii Island could also experience damaging winds . With such high winds, power lines and trees could be knocked down, leading to potential power outages and hazardous travel conditions.

For those in higher elevations, a Winter Storm Watch is also in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday morning. The summits of Haleakala, Mauna Kea, and Mauna Loa could see significant snowfall. Snow accumulation is estimated at up to 10 inches for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa , and up to 4 inches for Haleakala. Along with snow, there is also a chance for icy road conditions , making travel in these areas extremely dangerous.
Mariners are also urged to take precautions, as a Gale Watch has been issued for waters around Kauai. Strong winds and rough seas could capsize boats and reduce visibility , making ocean travel risky.
This storm is developing as a powerful winter low-pressure system is forming to the west of Hawaii and will pass north of Kauai on Thursday . A cold front associated with the system is expected to bring heavy showers and possible thunderstorms , especially over the western islands starting Wednesday evening.
As the storm approaches, residents are urged to take precautionary measures . Secure loose outdoor objects, prepare emergency kits, and stay updated on forecasts . If you live in flood-prone areas, be ready to evacuate if necessary . Mariners should avoid heading out to sea , and those in high-wind zones should be prepared for possible power outages .
