Intense Rain and Wild Weather Hit Eastern Australia
Good morning, and here’s an urgent weather update for those in eastern Australia. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued fresh warnings about intense rainfall, severe thunderstorms, and strong winds hitting multiple regions. After heavy overnight rain, areas like Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and parts of New South Wales have already seen significant impacts. For instance, some areas in Queensland recorded almost 60 millimeters of rain within just 30 minutes—a stark reminder of how quickly conditions can escalate.
Residents in the Southern Downs, South Burnett, Toowoomba, and Western Downs areas have been placed on high alert, with warnings of potential large hailstones and damaging winds. In New South Wales, rainfall totals have varied, with some areas receiving up to 80 millimeters overnight. Crawford recorded the highest rainfall at 86 millimeters. Meteorologists predict up to 20 millimeters more rain today in eastern districts, accompanied by thunderstorms stretching from Queensland down to the Hunter region.

The effects of this weather aren’t limited to rainfall alone. Along the east coast, temperatures remain humid and muggy, with scattered storms adding to the chaos. Clear skies and hot conditions dominate the inland, but the east coast faces persistent wet weather. Sydneysiders, for example, can expect a cloudy, rainy day with highs of around 27°C. In Queensland, while the western areas swelter under temperatures soaring past 40°C, the southeast faces widespread showers and storms, including in Brisbane.
Further south, Victoria and Tasmania remain mostly dry, though parts of western Victoria may see isolated thunderstorms. South Australia and Western Australia, too, have generally sunny conditions, though thunderstorms could develop in specific regions, such as Adelaide Hills.
As we brace for these conditions, it’s vital to prioritize safety. Secure your surroundings, stay indoors during storms, and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding. With forecasts suggesting continued wet weather in the coming days, let’s remain vigilant and prepared.
Stay safe and informed—this weather could shift rapidly.
